CRISIS IN NEW YORK CITY
Children Deprived of Arts & Music Education

Please help us advocate for the children of New York City who for nearly 40 years have been deprived of music education as a result of budget cuts in the 1970s.

According to New York University Professor David J. Elliott, we “need to protect and sustain the right of children to receive a balanced and comprehensive education.”1

Also, New York University Professor and New York Times music critic Allan Kozinn wrote:

If you look at how music was taught in public schools 40 years ago — and
for decades before that — you'll see exactly what's needed now. Back then
it was simple: Music was part of the curriculum, like math, science and
social studies.

We have an all-volunteer group inspired by the brainchild of Maestro José Antonio Abreu hoping that El Sistema's unique elements will be integrated and adapted into any system-wide restoration of New York City's music education curriculum.

Brian Levine, Managing Director, Glenn Gould Foundation, wrote an account of his recent (2008) visit to Caracas; in part he wrote:

El Sistema has demonstrated conclusively that music education is the gateway to
lifelong learning and a better future.
